Recently saw this movie "Dharm", at first i thought mite be a heavy movie (depressing stuff) which i never wanted to see on a sunday evening..
Dharm directed by bhawna talwar - (not heard of )starring Pankaj kapur and supriyapathkak.
First impression was it might be some documentary sort but when we sat to watch this movie it was a gripping one.
The story is based in Banaras and is about a Hindu Priest Chaturvedi (Pankaj Kapoor).Pandit Chaturvedi is a highly revered and learned priest. A child is abandon by a woman and brought in his house by his daughter. He agrees to adopt the child due to requests from his wife (Supriya Pathak) .Life takes a turn when he finds out that the child is a Muslim after he has become attached to the child. The family gives back the child to his mother. Chaturvedi engulfs himself in the purification process to cleanse his body, mind and soul due to contact with a Muslim soul. By the time, Chaturvedi thinks he is fully purified – the child reappears – seeking refuge, due to Hindu- Muslim riots. This is the time Chaturvedi finally realizes that the true religion is humanity and love .
Love conquers over the staunch believer of age old customs and tradition.
The movie made me think again how neighbours who live close by sharing all their festivals, happy and sad moments together ,suddenly become hungry of each others blood. How can one day a person become unknown to you just because of some coward, money leeches, staunch believrs of their so called faith.
The lively atmosphere becomes a graveyard ,where u cant differntiate a hindu or a muslim..Or rather the whole riot is all a political gammick.
i just wished it would be a wonderfull place to live where love would conquer all ,and there be no enemity.
